The weather in the summer of 1911 was among the hottest recorded, and trips to the sea Walton-on-the-Naze were so popular that visitors had to be turned away because the town was so crowded. The fine weather meant there was insufficient accommodation, and people slept in bathing machines and haylofts. On 10th January 1978, the windy weather brought a gale so severe that the beach huts of Walton-on-the-Naze were almost completely destroyed and the pier was damaged so severely that the lifeboat crew could not reach their launch, which was housed on it.
