1987 was the year of one of the worst weather events on record in Britain when the Great Storm hit the South East of England. In Epping Forest, trees were damaged significantly, but in Chigwell, the roofs were blown off of flats in the Limes Farm Estate by the dramatic weather. In October and November 2000, the weather saw such a deluge that many residents were forced to leave their homes due to the flooding. The flood water was so high that it was possible to travel down the Chigwell Road and navigate the Charlie Brown roundabout by canoe.
